The Expired Food Club

Last Tuesday was the first edition in a series of 6 evenings where people gather to eat a 3-course meal made from expired food. The meal is free if you contribute by bringing your own out of date food and help chop whatever needs a bit of extra preparation, thus you have The Expired Food Club. John and I had the privilege of joining the group on the opening night and celebrate a friend’s birthday.

If you read the article, you’ll find that we ate food that was rescued from the garbage cans of The Albert Cuyp Market and vendors gave away the food they were going to throw away themselves at the end of the day. John and I contributed some old yoghurt, stale bread and some 35% off veggies from Albert Heijn grocery store (which means they’re trying to sell them fast before they go bad). See below our contributions:

Once we were done slicing bread and chopping carrots we drank some beers and chatted with friends while the cook was busy making a 3-course meal from the food everyone brought. We had scrumptious bread soup, Thai vegetable curry, and a delicious fruit salad desert with chocolate shavings. It was incredible how much flavour the food had and the interesting combinations that could be made from all the random food that was brought.

If you’re in town I recommend trying out the Expired Food Club, you won’t forget the experience and great food! Hopefully no one get’s sick!
